Surveyor (Technician or Graduate)

As a Survey Technician / Graduate you will be joining NESE’s team of Surveyors and Engineers working on various projects around the New England region of NSW. 

  

Key Responsibilities

Field Surveying:

  • Conduct land surveys to determine legal property boundaries, topographic features, and land features for construction and development projects.
  • Set up and operate survey instruments, such as total stations, GPS receivers and levels.
  • Perform geodetic, boundary, and construction staking surveys, ensuring precision and adherence to safety regulations.
  • Collect and analyse data from field surveys, ensuring accurate measurements and readings.
  • Inspect sites to assess conditions and identify any potential issues that may affect survey results.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

  • Process field data and perform calculations using specialized software such as Magent, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Prepare detailed survey reports, maps, and drawings based on field data and analysis.
  • Review and verify the accuracy of survey data and provide recommendations or adjustments as necessary.
  • Create and maintain clear, organized records of survey results, documentation, and legal reports.

Legal and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure that all surveys comply with legal, regulatory, and environmental requirements, including zoning laws and property rights.
  • Prepare legal documents, including boundary surveys, subdivision plats, easement maps, and other land records.
  • Work with attorneys, engineers, and government officials to resolve boundary disputes or legal questions regarding property.

Client and Stakeholder Communication:

  • Liaise with clients, property owners, developers, and government agencies to discuss survey requirements, results, and recommendations.
  • Provide technical advice to clients and stakeholders, ensuring a thorough understanding of survey findings and implications.
  • Collaborate with construction teams to provide staking information for new buildings, roads, and other infrastructure projects.

Project Management:

  • Coordinate and manage survey projects, including overseeing the work of surveying assistants or junior staff.
  • Develop and track project timelines and budgets, ensuring surveys are completed on time and within cost constraints.
  • Conduct quality control reviews to ensure the accuracy and integrity of survey data and documentation.

 

Required Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • Tafe Cert IV, Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Surveying

Experience:

  • Previous experience as a surveyor with proficiency in performing land surveys.
  • Experience with surveying instruments, including GPS systems, total stations, and levels.
  • Proficient in using surveying software such as Magnet, AutoCAD, Civil 3D.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of surveying techniques, land laws, boundary determinations, and geospatial data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.) and survey-specific software.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to manage complex calculations and interpret legal documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
  • Good understanding of environmental and zoning regulations.

Surveyor Traineeship

Earn while you learn as with a Surveyor traineeship

As a Surveyor Trainee you will assist the NESE survey team in conducting fieldwork and office tasks related to land surveying, construction, property boundary delineation, and other surveying services.

The successful candidate will receive structured training to develop the skills required to become a qualified surveyor, gaining hands-on experience in both practical and technical aspects of surveying. Opportunities will be available to complete a Surveying Cert IV and/or Diploma while working.  

 

Key Responsibilities

Fieldwork Assistance:

  • Assist in setting up and operating surveying equipment (e.g., total stations, GPS, levels, etc.).
  • Conduct measurements and data collection for topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and construction staking.
  • Support experienced surveyors in conducting site visits and inspections.
  • Record field notes accurately and ensure that all collected data is complete and reliable.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols during field operations.

Office Support:

  • Assist with data processing, calculations, and preparing survey reports using software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other surveying tools.
  • Review maps, plans, and reports to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Help in drafting, editing, and finalising survey documents.
  • Maintain and organise survey records, including digital files and physical documents.

Training and Development:

  • Participate in internal training sessions to understand surveying principles and techniques.
  • Learn how to interpret land laws, regulations, and mapping conventions.
  • Gain practical knowledge in the use of surveying instruments and software.
  • Client and Project Support:
  • Assist in communicating with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to provide survey-related information.
  • Support project teams in managing project timelines and deliverables.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Skills:

  • Basic understanding of surveying principles, measurement techniques, and land laws (training will be provided).
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software and survey-related software.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to work with precise measurements.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, with physical stamina for fieldwork.

Career Development

As a Surveyor Trainee, you will have opportunities to progress into more senior roles within the surveying team. With continued training, you may progress to Surveyor, Senior Surveyor, or Project Manager roles in the future.
